As she lounged in bed on Sunday morning, she smiled. The night before had been the best night she’d had since her mom died. It was fun to leave her sadness behind for a while and just visit with Reed to reminisce about old times. He and Jed had been good friends growing up, and Reed had always spent time at their house, as Jed had at his.

Jed offered to let Reed stay with him until he could find a rental. He had plenty of room and it was just him and Bentley. Reed didn’t want to impose but, after much discussion and assurance, by the end of the night had agreed to take him up on his offer.

A ripple of excitement fluttered in Paige’s chest. She’d always had a bit of a crush on Reed, in that way a little sister is in awe of her older brother’s friends, especially the cute ones that are sweet. She doubted he ever knew it, as it was all a teenage girl’s fantasies, but seeing him again brought back those same feelings of attraction.

She glanced at her nightstand and saw the photo she kept of her and Danny, and she was mortified. How could she even think those things with Danny barely being gone?

Paige pulled the pillow over her face.

Silently, she berated herself for noticing how handsome Reed was, even with the little wisps of gray near his ears and the same flecks in his beard.

To think of it, her own roots were getting gray, and she hadn’t kept her last appointment for a cut and color. The expanding line of silver along her part needed some attention. Like Margot, she had dark hair. While she had thought the silver strands in her mom’s hair looked elegant, she wasn’t quite ready to embrace them herself.

She felt heat rush up her neck and fill her cheeks. Of all the times over the last thirty years, she would have to run into Reed when she was weeks overdue for a touch-up.

When he’d hugged her goodbye the night before, she’d closed her eyes and savored the scent of cedarwood along his collar. She’d inhaled deeper and hints of clove mixed with the woodsy scent made her want to stay there forever.

His arms had wrapped her in a firm embrace and he’d held her longer than a quick farewell. Nobody had hugged her like that since Danny. The feelings that bubbled to the surface surprised her, but she couldn’t deny how safe she felt with him.

Danny had been her everything, but they’d also had some rough years, especially during the miscarriages and loss of hope. They had recovered and become closer in many ways, sharing the disappointment and fashioning a life without children.

Her husband had been the major breadwinner with a great job, so she had been able to do her freelance work without worrying about making a living. All summer her mom had encouraged her to get back into it, but now, it was too much to think about.
